Who’s Your Assistant Director? Spotlight: Kinga Magiera

Here’s one of our awesome Assistant Directors, whom you’ll get to meet on Thursday along with the rest of the Assistant Director and Director Boards. Want to have a say in the entertainment we bring to campus? Come get involved!

Kinga (’15) is the Assistant Director of Concerts! She’s helped bring in artists such as AndyGrammer and Moi Navarro this past year. Kinga helps her Director with everything from arranging artist’s visits, to setting up for the concert, AND she gets to meet all the celebrities :) Read-on to find out why this Chicago girl loves Snickers and UPC!

Jen is another of our fabulous Assistant Directors (AD) on UPC. She works on Graphic Design, i.e. everything poster/postcard/flyer related. How did you first hear about UPC: I’m a Delta Gamma, and one of my sisters is involved.

Why did you decide to be an AD: I want to go into event/wedding planning, so I thought becoming apart of UPC would be great experience!

Favorite UPC memory: Before becoming apart of UPC, I loved attending the Buried Life and getting to meet the guys afterwards!

What keeps you coming back to UPC: I love planning fun events with fun people!

The Down-Low on Assistant Directors: Lindsey Clark


Lindsey is one of the Assistant Directors (AD) for UPC. She works behind scenes with all things Special Events (Gala 2012 anyone??) to bring fun, new, and creative entertainment to the Denison community. Want to know a little bit more about Lindsey? Her favorite candy? Her love for UPC? Read on!

How did you first hear about UPC?

I saw posters in the freshman halls last year.

Why did you decide to be an AD?

I wanted to become involved on campus and UPC definitely makes that possible.

What keeps you coming back to UPC?

This is my first year in UPC as an AD, so what keeps me from quitting is that I actually like going to some of the events we host.

Favorite candy bar: Milky Way

Song most played on your iTunes: Smile by Uncle Kracker.

If you had an ENTIRE weekend with no homework or responsibilities, what would you do?

I would go on an adventure with my friends, whether we road trip somewhere, go to a concert, or explore the outdoors, it would be really fun just to do something spur of the moment with no responsibilities holding us back.

Top dance crew BreakSk8 coming for Big Red Weekend

Breaksk8, a top national dance crew, will perform for Big Red Weekend on Slayter 3rd floor on Friday, Sept. 28. at 10:00pm. The event is free and open to the Denison community, alumni, and parents. For more information contact upccommunicatoin@denison.edu

BreakSk8 has amazed audiences around the globe with their unique style of breakdancing on wheels. The group became a household favorite when the joined MTVs hit show Americas Best Dance Crew. The only crew on skates-Breaksk8 competed against the top 10 crews in the nation!

 Judge and former member of the group Nsync, JC Chasez said of the group during Michael Jackson Thriller week- “Michael Jackson was a superstar and Breaksk8 danced like superstars!” You don’t want to miss this one of a kind, high energy, and interactive show!

Sierra Leone civil war survivor tells his story

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Ishmael Beah, storyteller and author, who survived the civil war of Sierra Leone, will share his experience at Denison on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7:30pm in Swasey Chapel. Beah’s story recounts his time as a child soldier from the age of thirteen, after his family had been killed. After serving for over two years, he was removed by UNICEF and placed in a rehabilitation home in the capital of Sierra Leone. After his rehabilitation, Beah won a competition to attend the United Nations conference on behalf of Sierra Leone and share how the war had affected children of his home country.

In 1998, Beah moved to New York City where he completed high school and went on to attend Oberlin College. His advocacy on behalf of children soldiers and how children worldwide are affected by war, has allowed him to serve on a UN panel with Secretary General Kofi Annan and discuss the issues with dignitaries such as Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton. He is a member of the Human Rights Watch Children’s Rights Division Committee.

Beah will share his experience and his memoir: A Long Way Gone. The event is private to the Denison community. The event is sponsored by the Invisible Children chapter at Denison, the Department of Sociology/Anthropology, and University Programming Council.

Moi Navarro: First Concert of the Year

GRANVILLE, Ohio-Moi Navarro will open the concert season this year for University Programming Council (UPC). Moi will share his indie music style in an intimate setting at The Bandersnatch coffeehouse on campus.

Moi appeared in the third season of NBC’s The Singoff in the a capella group Kinfolk9. His music is a blend of jazz, folk, funk, rock and soul. He was also a part of Max Azria’s clothing line campaign for BCBGeneration and has performed for Arnold Schawrzenneger.

GRANVILLE, Ohio—For the first off-campus trip of the year, University Programming Council (UPC) will be going to the Columbus Center of Science and Industry (COSI). The trip will be on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 1:00-5:30pm. COSI is recognized for its interactive and fun approach to the science world. Students can expect not only an educational, but a fully entertaining trip!

Tickets can be bought for $10 at a table in Slayter Union from 10:30am-2:30pm on Monday, Sept. 10, Tuesday, Sept. 11, and Wednesday, Sept. 12.
